City road projects
The city’s Transportation Department builds intersection improvements, streetscapes, sidewalks, trails, signals, bridges and resurfacing on city right-of-way. Most of the money comes from the Cobb County special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST), plus state and federal aid and the city’s general fund.
Projects the city lists as active or programmed under the 2016 SPLOST:
- Bellemeade Drive bridge
- Allgood Road at Merritt Road, at Sawyer Road and at Scufflegritt Road
- Sawyer Road at Canton Road
- Burnt Hickory Road trail
- Cherokee Street sidewalk
- Kennesaw Avenue streetscape
- Manget Street at Lakewood Drive
- Old 41 bridge over the CSX railroad
- Powder Springs Street at Laurel Springs Lane
- Powder Springs Street streetscape, Sandtown Road to South Marietta Parkway
- Mill Street plaza upgrade
Under the 2022 SPLOST, the city names the James Street and Tower Road signal, Mountain View Ridge, the Roswell Street four-lane gap and a flashing pedestrian beacon on Cherry Street. The full list is in the 2022 SPLOST project list (PDF).
What comes next. The City Council approved a recommended project list for a 2028 SPLOST on Feb. 11, 2026, and sent it to Cobb County for review. The city estimates its share at $78,227,427 over about six years, starting when the 2022 SPLOST collections end. See the 2028 SPLOST proposed project list (PDF).
