Evergreen, 64 affordable apartments for seniors at 879 Roswell St. NE, breaks ground Thursday, Oct. 22. The four-story building will have stores on Roswell Street.
Construction starts next week on Evergreen, a four-story building with 64 affordable apartments for seniors at 879 Roswell St. NE. The groundbreaking ceremony is at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the site, the City of Marietta announced Monday.
The Marietta Housing Authority and Prestwick Companies are building it as a public-private partnership.
What is planned
The city’s announcement describes:
- 64 affordable apartments for seniors
- a four-story building
- retail space on the ground floor, facing Roswell Street
- support from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, the state agency that awards affordable housing tax credits
The announcement does not give the cost, the rents, the age limit or an opening date. It says the Marietta City Council approved the plan but does not give the date of the vote.
Why the city backs it
The city ties Evergreen to its plan for the Roswell Street corridor. The Envision Marietta Livable Centers Initiative study calls for a more walkable street that links neighborhoods with the stores and services they use. The city has spent money on new sidewalks, lighting and trees along the street through its Roswell Streetscape Project.
“This project will help meet an important housing need while building on the improvements we have made along the corridor,” Mayor Steve Tumlin said in the announcement.
Noel Taylor, executive director of the Marietta Housing Authority, thanked the partners, including the mayor and council, “whose leadership has helped drive affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization across our city.”
Brandon Underdahl, chief operating officer of Prestwick Companies, said the company is excited “to break ground and bring much needed senior housing and revitalization along a major corridor in Marietta.”
What it means for you
- If you are a senior looking for an affordable apartment, the Marietta Housing Authority is the landlord partner to ask about eligibility and a waiting list. The announcement does not say when applications open.
- If you use Roswell Street, expect construction at the site from late October. The city has not posted a lane closure for the work.
- If you live nearby, see our Roswell Street neighborhood guide for schools, parks and the streetscape project, and our zoning and building permits page for how to follow other projects.
We will update this story when the rents, the application process or an opening date are published.
