The city of Marietta collects trash and recycling weekly and brush on Wednesdays. Out by 7 a.m.; large items need a request. Sanitation: 770-794-5595.

Last checked Oct. 5, 2026. Updated each time the city changes its rules or rates. Facts on this page come from the City of Marietta’s Sanitation Services pages.

Marietta runs its own trash service. The city’s Sanitation Division, part of Public Works, collects household garbage, curbside recycling and yard waste at homes inside the city limits. City ordinance requires every resident to sign up for city service, and private haulers are not allowed to collect household trash in the city, according to the Sanitation Rules page. Everything has to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your pickup day.

City service covers addresses inside the city limits. A Marietta mailing address in unincorporated Cobb County is not in the city.

What day is my pickup?

The city collects household garbage once a week, curbside recycling once a week and yard waste (brush) once a week. Recycling runs Monday through Friday. To find your days, search your address on the city’s Collection Calendar, which can also send you reminders, or call the Sanitation Division at 770-794-5595.

The same calendar is available as a phone app for iPhone and Android. The city also points residents to its “Trash Talk” app for schedule changes and delays. The Waste Wizard answers “which cart does this go in?” item by item.

The city’s rules for cans:

  • Use city-supplied cans only, with lids that close. Store them at the back of the house or in the garage, not at the curb.
  • Put cans at the curb before 7 a.m., and only on your pickup day. They must not block the sidewalk, the gutter or traffic.
  • A full can may not weigh more than 60 pounds, and nothing sharp goes in it.
  • Extra cans above your service level are charged at $5 a can per pickup.
  • Double-bag used cat litter and set it at the curb on garbage day.

The city has a roll-cart placement guide (PDF) showing where the cart should sit so the truck arm can reach it.

Holiday schedule

The city does not move pickup for every holiday. When the city observes a holiday, your collection day may shift. The city publishes a personalized holiday schedule for each address through the Holiday Pickup Schedule lookup and the apps, and mails a new holiday schedule to all residents at the end of each year.

The city’s holiday notes:

  • Expect delays on the days after a holiday. Routes change to handle the extra garbage and recycling.
  • Extra household garbage set out on your next service day after a holiday is collected at no charge.
  • Regular fees still apply to furniture, appliances and other large items.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26, and Christmas is Friday, Dec. 25. Check your address on the lookup before those weeks.

Recycling

Curbside recycling is weekly and is collected by the city; the materials go to WestRock. The city’s list of items that go in the recycling bin includes newspapers, phone books, magazines, aluminum and steel cans, plastic soda bottles, milk jugs and water bottles, and corrugated cardboard cut to no more than 2 feet by 2 feet. Newspapers must go in a grocery bag; loose newspapers are not collected. The full list is in the WestRock recycling guide (PDF).

You can use an old trash can or plastic bin for recycling if it is clearly marked as recycling. To get a city recycling bin, call 770-794-5595.

Brush and yard waste

The city’s rules list Wednesday as the pickup day for brush and yard trimmings:

  • Keep yard waste separate from household garbage.
  • Bag grass and leaves and set the bags next to the curb. Use paper bags; state law bans plastic in compost landfills.
  • Branches and limbs must be 6 feet long or shorter, no thicker than 4 inches and no heavier than 100 pounds a piece.
  • The city does not take logs, stumps or trees cut down by a tree service. The tree company removes those.
  • A large load (about 200 cubic feet, or 48 bags or more) carries a $100 charge. Call the Sanitation Division first if you have that much.

Large items and special pickups

Furniture, appliances and other items too big for the can need a request first. Fill out the city’s Request Pickup of Special Items form or call 770-794-5581. The charge depends on weight and volume and is added to your sanitation bill. Do not set large items at the street until the pickup is arranged, then put them out before 7 a.m. on the agreed day.

The city does not collect building materials, construction or demolition debris, tires, batteries, rocks, dirt, concrete, car parts, motor oil or hazardous waste. Paint is collected only when it is completely dried out (cat litter or sand helps), with the lid off, on your regular garbage day. The city says most of the items it refuses can go to the Cobb County transfer station on County Services Parkway; call Cobb County at 770-528-2500 for its rules.
